Cats and dogs in the U.S. are too often left neglected without food or water or shelter. The humane societies do what they can to help discarded animals; but wouldn’t it be better to find legal ways to slow down these problems? Several states and some cities have found a way to help with all the abandoned (and usually euthanized) dogs and cats. These states and cities are working to shut down puppy mills with a law that says pet stores can only sell dogs and cats from the humane societies. Humane societies "fix" dogs and cats before the dogs and cats go to the pet stores. In the past, too many pet store dogs and cats have been bought on impulse; and when the pet owners no longer wanted to take care of the pets, the pets became strays that made babies. Dec., 2015, Australia has decided to kill 2 million stray cats, but they estimate

they have 8 million stray cats. OK, here’s a bombshell. Why not require a license for every dog and cat and require all dogs and cats to be fixed unless the owner has an expensive breeder license; and put the dog / cat license no. on their required collar or on an implanted chip. Wouldn’t that help the dog and cat breeding problem? Is there a better solution? I know we have a heart for all dogs and cats; but massive nos. are already being euthanized; dogs and cats without a license, would be euthanized. I don’t see the problem of dogs and cats breeding being fixed until we get all dogs and cats (except permitted breeders) fixed. County humane societies could then become licensed breeders for breeding low-cost, fixed dogs and cats. The other big domestic animal problem

is cows. The UN says livestock production is responsible for 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions (belching, off-gassing from manure, nitrous oxide emissions from animal feed, and the energy intensive process of producing the feeds). The U.S. government subsidizes farming; and cows, by their sheer numbers, their huge food and water consumption, and their methane gas and nitrate excretions are the worst domestic animal disaster in the world. There’s actually a market for all these cows because the world’s human population is so high; but the world’s climate is warming and the world is running out of fresh, clean water. “Cowspiracy”, not conspiracy, is a great movie documentary of this problem. Will we be good stewards?
